Who is Jesus? Immanuel Week 1
Today we are going to look at the mind-bending concept that Jesus was fully
human and fully divine. Explaining that concept is incredibly hard. Illustrating it
from popular culture often falls short too. For example, the movie The Matrix
features a messianic figure who is going to free the enslaved human race by
entering into their digital world and defeating the machines holding them captive.
He does this by eventually dying and then returning even stronger. But when he
enters their world, it is just a digital imprint of his physical being, and the digital imprint has unlimited powers whereas his physical body is just like ours. Jesus wasn’t like that. It wasn’t like part of God entered creation and turned a person into a superhero, and it wasn’t as though he was just a digital imprint. He was
real flesh and blood. Sometimes it’s okay to let the mystery be a mystery. This
season of Advent, we will be looking at the first chapter of John. The Gospel of
John in many ways can seem mysterious. But this isn’t a bad thing. Sometimes
we forget how wondrous and mysterious Christmas is. This series will give us the
opportunity to be surprised by God’s entry into this world.
